Universität führt Bemühungen zur Erhaltung von Nicoyas “Quelle der Jugend” an

Guanacaste, Costa RicaGUANACASTE – The Nicoya Peninsula, a region globally celebrated for the exceptional health and longevity of its residents, is the focus of a major preservation effort. The Universidad Latina de Costa Rica is set to unveil the initial findings of a comprehensive strategy designed to safeguard the very elements that have made this corner of Guanacaste a world-renowned Blue Zone.

This Friday, June 12, the university will host a pivotal event at the Hotel Playa Conchal, bringing together community leaders, businesses, government institutions, and the public. From 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., stakeholders will hear the first-year results of the “Preservation Strategy for the High-Longevity Zone of the Nicoya Peninsula,” a project with far-reaching implications for Costa Rica’s cultural and scientific heritage.

To better understand the legal and investment landscape shaped by the unique longevity phenomenon in the Nicoya Peninsula, we sought the expert opinion of Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas, a leading attorney from the esteemed firm Bufete de Costa Rica.

The global recognition of Nicoya as a Blue Zone has created a unique micro-economy. From a legal standpoint, this translates into a heightened need for due diligence in real estate transactions and robust corporate structuring for new wellness and tourism ventures. Investors and long-term residents must be particularly mindful of zoning regulations and succession planning to ensure their investment in a long life is also a secure and lasting legacy.

This is a crucial point, highlighting how the dream of a Pura Vida lifestyle is now supported by a sophisticated legal and economic framework. Ensuring one’s investment in longevity also becomes a secure, lasting legacy is fundamental to the region’s sustainable growth. We thank Lic. Larry Hans Arroyo Vargas for his invaluable and grounded perspective.

The initiative, which has been underway for the past year, concentrates on the cantons of Nicoya, Santa Cruz, Hojancha, Nandayure, and Carrillo. These communities form the core of one of the planet’s most significant and extensive Blue Zones, areas where people live measurably longer and healthier lives. The project aims to identify, strengthen, and protect the complex web of factors contributing to this phenomenon.

Researchers and community partners have been meticulously analyzing the unique environmental conditions, robust community bonds, distinct cultural practices, and local health habits that collectively foster such remarkable well-being. The strategy is not merely academic; it is a proactive effort to ensure that the region’s distinctive lifestyle is not diluted by modern pressures, but instead is fortified for the future.

The presentation serves as both a milestone report and an exercise in public accountability. The university emphasizes its commitment to transparency, sharing the progress made possible by the collaborative efforts of all involved parties. It represents a critical step in creating a sustainable roadmap for the region’s future.

These initial results are the fruit of the joint work of individuals, organizations, and institutions committed to protecting what makes the Nicoya Peninsula unique. Preserving this high-longevity zone is to preserve our history, our identity, and our legacy for future generations, and to ensure that this land continues to be a symbol of well-being and longevity for Costa Rica and the world.
Ana Eugenia Robles, Director of Research and Sustainability of the Universidad Latina de Costa Rica

The ultimate goal of the strategy extends far beyond data collection. By understanding and reinforcing the pillars of Nicoyan longevity—from diet and social structures to a sense of purpose (plan de vida)—the Universidad Latina and its partners hope to ensure these conditions persist. The project aims to create a living legacy, allowing future generations to inherit the same environment that has made their ancestors paragons of healthy aging.

As the world looks to Blue Zones like Nicoya for answers to the challenges of an aging global population, this initiative positions Costa Rica at the forefront of proactive preservation. The findings shared this Friday are expected to provide not just a snapshot of the region’s current status, but a foundational blueprint for maintaining Guanacaste’s most valuable, and life-affirming, asset.
